Examples and Warnings These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. 1 Corinthians 10:11 (NIV) Joshua – Samson – Saul – David I. Joshua is an example of fearlessness Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?” “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord have for his servant?” Joshua 5:13-14
The lesson from Joshua: When you fear the Lord, you have nothing else to fear. If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31 (NIV) II. Samson is a warning against carelessness He awoke from his sleep and thought, ‘I’ll go out as before and shake myself free.’ But he did not know that the Lord had left him. Judges 16:20 (NIV) The lesson from Samson: Never be careless about God’s grace. Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Proverbs 4:23 (NIV) III. Saul is a warning against pridefulness But Samuel replied: “Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of [witchcraft], and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has rejected you as king.” 1 Samuel 15:22-23 (NIV) The lesson from Saul: God’s will must be completed God’s way. IV. David is an example of brokenness 2 Samuel 11:1-12:25 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge . . . Cleanse me, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow . . . Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
